Bible Study Material: The Cross – Part 2

“If sin can only be washed away through the cross of Christ, why did Jesus tell several people during His ministry that their sins were forgiven? Doesn't this imply that forgiveness of sins can be granted simply through spoken words?”

This question is highly critical and insightful. It touches upon one of the most fascinating theological controversies among the experts of the law during the earthly ministry of Jesus: “Why does this man speak this way? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” (Mark 2:7).

In short: Jesus had the authority to forgive sins through His spoken words precisely because He is God who was actively on His way to the cross. His words of forgiveness were not empty pronouncements or a trivialization of sin; they were a spiritual "check" that He would later pay in full with His own life on Calvary.

Here is the comprehensive biblical breakdown of this reality:

1. Evidence of His Divine Authority

When Jesus said, “Your sins are forgiven,” He was directly revealing His divine identity. In Jewish theology, sin is fundamentally an offense committed against God; therefore, only God has the absolute right and prerogative to grant forgiveness. By forgiving sins verbally, Jesus was explicitly demonstrating that He is Yahweh manifest in human flesh.

"But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— “I tell you, stand up, take your mat, and go home.”" — Mark 2:10-11 (NET)

Jesus deliberately healed the man's physical, visible paralysis as an undeniable material proof that His spoken words regarding the invisible realm of spiritual forgiveness carried real, sovereign divine power.

2. Forgiveness is "Credited" to the Cross

The forgiveness that Jesus distributed through His spoken words during His earthly ministry was far from “free.” That forgiveness was completely contingent upon the ultimate substitutionary sacrifice He would perform later on the cross.

In the perspective of an eternal God who exists completely outside the constraints of linear, human time, Christ's sacrifice was established before the foundation of the world. Therefore, the cleansing power of Jesus' blood flows “retroactively” (backward in time) to cover the Old Testament saints and the individuals He personally forgave on earth, just as it flows “proactively” (forward in time) to cover all of us today.

"And almost everything is purified with blood according to the law, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness." — Hebrews 9:22 (NET)

If Jesus merely offered verbal forgiveness without fulfilling the actual legal penalty on the cross, the absolute, holy justice of God would remain unsatisfied. The cross is the exact physical and historical location where those words of forgiveness were legally paid in full.

3. Why Did He Choose to Use Spoken Words?

Jesus used spoken words as a powerful mechanism to communicate absolute, personal assurance to individuals who exercised genuine faith. Whether He was speaking to the crying, sinful woman or the paralyzed man, He was directly responding to their heart's trust.

"But Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”" — Luke 7:50 (NET)

Jesus wanted humanity to know that divine forgiveness is a real, experiential reality that can be heard and received personally. His spoken words brought immediate supernatural peace to the human heart, while His cross established the unshakeable, legal foundation before the righteous throne of God.

4. The Fundamental Distinction: Proclaiming vs. Executing

The Theological Framework: The pronouncements of Christ and the sacrifice of Calvary operate in perfect harmony, but they fulfill distinct aspects of salvation:

  • The Spoken Words of Jesus: This represents the authoritative proclamation (declaration) that forgiveness has been graciously granted to the believer based on their faith.
  • The Cross of Jesus: This represents the cosmic execution (payment) where the legal certificate of debt and the curse of sin are physically blotted out and fully settled before divine justice.

Conclusion: Not a Cheap Grace

Jesus never forgave sins with mere words as if sin were a trivial or cheap matter. He forgave with words because He is the Supreme Judge who knew with absolute certainty that only a short time later, He Himself would carry the crushing, agonizing weight of that person's condemnation upon the rugged wood of the cross. Without the cross, the spoken words of forgiveness would hold no legal authority or power before the perfect justice of God.

Knowing this reality, are you still convinced that human sin can be erased by mere empty words or superficial rituals?

Are you completely certain that your soul does not need the profound reality of the cross for your eternal salvation?
